Introduction to Functional Safety Standards

The functional safety of control systems is one of the buzz  subjects currently within machinery safety, with debates on the relative importance of circuit architecture, selection of components and the safety integrity of components and systems.

The original standard for safety control systems, EN 954-1, is being removed at the end of 2011. It’s replacement, EN ISO 13849-1, combines the circuit architecture concepts of EN 954-1 and the safety integrity principles of IEC 61508, and some argue that an already complicated subject has now been made unnecessarily complex.

This seminar will give a practical approach to using EN ISO 13849-1 and show the benefits of using freely available software tools.
