Packaging Terms Explained

Pallet Forming, Dismantling and Securing Machines

Packaging machines which form, dismantle or secure pallets and other loading units.

Palletizing Machines

Packaging machines which form loading units of group packages or rigid containers.

Low Level Palletiser: A palletiser in which layers of packages are formed at one level, usually a low level, transferred by pushing onto a stripper plate which raises or lowers to the appropriate level and transfers the layer onto the pallet. The pallet remains at one level while it is being formed.

Low Level Lift Off Palletiser: A low level palletiser which transfers the load by gripping and lifting the layer.

High Level Palletiser: A palletiser in which layers of packages are formed at one level usually a high level, and transferred onto the pallet which is raised and then lowered as the pallet forms.

High Level Lift Off Palletiser: A high level palletiser which transfers the load by gripping and lifting the layer.

Multi-Position Palletiser A palletiser in which layers of packages are formed in one or a number of positions and are then transferred to one of several pallets which are formed simultaneously.

Robot Palletiser: A palletiser which can be programmed to form a pallet in a variety of ways and generally picks up packages one at a time or a row at a time and places them on a pallet which remains in one position as it is being loaded.

Column Palletiser: A palletiser which creates stacks of packages which are then transferred to the pallet as a group.

Pallet Dismantling Machines; Depalletisers Packaging machines which dismantle a loading unit of rigid containers or group packages.

Low Level Depalletiser A depalletiser in which layers of packages are gripped and swept from a pallet onto a stripper plate which then moves to the level of a receiving table where the layer is deposited. The pallet remains in a fixed position while it is being dismantled.

Low Level Lift Off Depalletiser A low level depalletiser which transfers the load by gripping and lifting the layer.

High Level Depalletiser A depalletiser in which layers of packages are gripped and moved from a pallet onto a receiving table, usually positioned at a high level. The height of the pallet is raised as the pallet is dismantled.

High Level Lift Off Depalletiser A high level depalletiser which transfers the load by gripping and lifting the layer.

Robot Depalletiser A depalletiser which can be programmed to dismantle a pallet in a variety of ways and generally picks up packages one at a time or a row at a time from a pallet which remains in one position as it is being dismantled.

Column Depalletiser A depalletiser which removes column stacks of packages from a pallet and then dismantles the stacks.

Pallet Securing Machines

Pallet Strapping Machines

Vertical Strapping Machine: A packaging machine which applies a strap, usually metal or plastic, vertically around a loading unit.

Horizontal strapper A packaging machine which applies a strap, usually metal or plastic, horizontally around a loading unit.

Pallet compression strapping machine A packaging machine which compresses a palletised load before applying a series of straps to secure the load.

Pallet stretch wrappers

Rotating pallet stretchwrapper A packaging machine which wraps a loading unit in thermoplastic film or net, applied in a spiral pattern from a reel while the loading unit is rotated.

Robot stretchwrapper
A self-propelled packaging machine which can be programmed to apply strech film to a pallet by travelling around the pallet.

Fixed pallet stretchwrapper A packaging machine which wraps a loading unit in thermoplastic film or net, applied in a spiral pattern from a reel which is rotated around the stationary loading unit.

Two reel pallet stretchwrapper A packaging machine which wraps a loading unit in thermoplastic film or net, applied in a spiral pattern from two reels which rotate around the stationary loading unit.

Stretch hood applicator A packaging machine which wraps a loading unit in thermoplastic film, which is supplied as a reel of lay flat tubular film. A length of film is sealed at one end and then opened, stretched and placed over the loading unit.

Pallet shrinkwrapping machines

Shrink Hood Applicator: A packaging machine which wraps a loading unit in thermoplastic film, which is supplied as a reel of lay flat tubular film. A length of film is sealed at one end and then opened and placed over the loading unit.

Pallet Shrink Oven: A packaging machine which shrinks thermoplastic film around a pallet.

Pallet Shrink Tunnel: A packaging machine which shrinks thermoplastic film around a loading unit, as the units pass through the tunnel.

Pallet Shrink Frame: A packaging machine which shrinks thermoplastic film around a loading unit, by moving a heated frame over the surface of the film.

Ancillary equipment for pallets

Empty Pallet Magazine: A packaging machine which dispenses empty pallets from a stack or accepts single empty pallets and places them in a stack.

Pallet Stacker / Unstacker: A packaging machine which stacks or unstacks loaded pallets.

Pallet Changer: A packaging machine which removes a pallet load from a pallet so that it can be placed on another pallet.

Layer Pad Inserter/Remover: A packaging machine or attachment which places layer pads onto layers of products as loading units are formed or removes layer pads as a pallet is dismantled.

Top Sheet Dispenser: A packaging machine or attachment which places a sheet of thermoplastic material on top of a loading unit before it is stretchwrapped.
